Match Report:
Tring Athletic Reds 2 - Widmer End Youth 4
Scorers: Harrison Cornick & Tom Ainsworth
Disappointing result from a very winnable game.
Reds looked very strong from kickoff, putting Widmer under constant pressure for the first part of the game. We were rewarded with a scrappy goal on 12 minutes - pleasing but we should have been more ahead at that stage. Around this time a couple of late arrivals came on for Widmer and they grew in strength. The rest of the half was mostly even, with Tring perhaps just shading it. As the half drew to a close we went two ahead with a sharp break and an excellent, composed finish from Tom on 39 minutes. I hoped wed close out the half, unfortunately Widmer responded immediately and scored from a long ball into our box and a header following a great initial save from Charlie.
Half Time: 2-1
From the start of the second half we were on the back foot. Widmer carried all of their momentum from the first half and with a fairly physical, long ball approach created more chances than us. This pressure eventually told on 65 minutes when they scored after an unfortunate mixup. At 2-2, the game was still there to be won, however we were not able to raise our game enough and Widmer continued to pressure us. Goals on 75 minutes and 84 minutes gave Widmer the win, despite an admirable rally from Tring in the final 10 minutes.
Some hard lessons today. No-one likes to be 2-0 up and end up in the losing side - we need to develop some resilience and composure when we go ahead. Widmer were a tall, physical side and they eventually started playing to their strengths - we need to learn quickly to adapt our approach during games. Most of all we need to put teams away when we are on top - theyre were long periods when we were in control of the game, we need to turn pressure into goals and not let teams back into the game.
This was a very winnable fixture, we must look forward to the return game and the chance to get the right result.
