Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup
Saturday 6th August 2016

Tring Athletic 0 1 Desborough Town
(John Dean 81st min)
Athletics interest in the new seasons FA Cup disappointingly failed at the first hurdle when they lost
0 - 1 at home against United Counties League side Desborough Town.
In very hot conditions there was little to choose between the two sides in the early part of the
game, neither side troubling the keepers. The visitors were giving away a number of late fouls
especially on Luke Dunstan. Athletics first opportunity in the 16th minute came from defender Dave
O’Connor whose shot from distance whistled past the post.
After 30 minutes of play the referee called a drinks break due to the hot conditions. Following this break Athletic pushed on and created a couple of chances. First Chris Vardy having a shot go wide and then Jack Sunderland curling a shot wide. In the 39th minute Athletic created their best chance of the game.
Ryan Sturges chipping in the ball to Chris Vardy who headed goal wards, however keeper Chris Jones managed to tip the ball over the bar for the first corner of the game.
Half Time: Tring Athletic 0 0 Desborough Town.
The second half saw Athletics Paul Jeffreys coming on for Luke Dunstan.
The early part of the second half saw little goalmouth action from both sides, with the hot conditions it was inevitable that the pace of the game would slow.
Athletic brought on Chris Stapleton for Chris Mason in the 63rd minute and Desborough Town brought on Sam Durrant for Liam Boath a short while later.
It wasn’t until the 70th minute that either side created a chance, Athletics Chris Stapleton having a
terrific shot agonisingly go just past the post. A further drinks break came 5 minutes later. In the
79th minute Athletic introduced Joe Naylor for Jack Sunderland.
The game looked to be heading for a replay however Desborough Towns John Dean had other ideas. He collected the ball outside of Athletics area, evaded two defenders before shooting into the far corner of the game from a tight angle in the 81st minute.
Athletic tried desperately to find an equaliser and created four corners in the last 8 minutes but were unable to threaten the visitors goal.
Full Time: Tring Athletic 0 1 Desborough Town.
A disappointing outcome for Athletic, especially as their opponents rarely threatened and only had
the one chance and not one corner during the whole of the game.
Athletic now look to start their league programme with a home game against local rivals Leverstock Green on Tuesday night.
