Dudley Latham Memorial (Premier Division) Cup - 1st Round
Leighton Town 0-1 TAFC First team

TAFC goals: Christopher Stapleton
We Progress Through to Next Round

Last night saw Leighton and Athletic meet for the second time already this season, and it was Athletic who came out on top again in a tightly fought game with substitute Chris Stapleton sealing the win in the 80th minute with an excellent finish.

Athletic made three changes from Saturdays game with Tommy Twelves, Lanre Ladipo and Lessa Boka all starting. The early exchanges were fairly even without neither keeper being troubled, although a shot from Athletics George Brinkman did hit the post in the 17th minute with home keeper Jack Sillitoe well beaten. Play was frenetic at times with too many niggling fouls breaking up play and the flow of the game, both sides were trying to take control but neither side
were able to dominate. A typical local derby. With the first half winding down chances were few and limited to ones from well outside of both penalty areas.

Half Time: Leighton Town 0 0 Tring Athletic

The second half saw Leighton take the game to Athletic, winning several corners and free kicks. Ben Gallant had a shot go close in the 48th minute but Athletic defended well and weathered this early dominance from the home side.Athletic did have the ball in the net but was rightly ruled out as scorer Dave O’Connor cleared fouled a defender. Athletic brought on Ryan Sturges for the Lanre Ladipo who had picked up an injury in the first half. Both sides continued to concede free kicks and therefore ultimately yellow cards. In the 60th minute Athletic brought on Chris Stapleton for Lessa Boka which saw Athletic with three strikers on the pitch. The game was end to end with Sam Joliffe shooting over the bar from a free kick from just outside of the area. Athletic were then forced into making their final change when Jack Seaton came on for the injured George Brinkman. In the 80th minute Luke Dunstan played a great ball through to Chris Vardy who turned and shot towards goal, the shot was blocked but the ball fell to Chris Stapleton on the edge of the area who placed a perfect shot into the far corner of the goal. As hard as Leighton tried they were unable to score, although they did have the ball in the net but it was rightly ruled out for off side. The final minutes saw Athletic create a couple of chances to no avail.

This was always going to be a close game with both defences dominant.
