TAFC First team 1-1 St Margarestbury

TAFC goals: George Carbery

Our chances of extending our unbeaten run to 13 games looked in danger until George Carbery popped up at a timely moment a quarter of an hour from the end to score an equaliser. George has scored in three successive games and it ensured we avoided our first defeat since the 13 August.

It was disappointing to drop two points at home to a team sitting in bottom place especially after missing a penalty but Bury didn't play like a team propping up the division and they fully deserved a point. On this performance they will surely climb up the table to safety.

After Mark Richardson broke his clavicle on Saturday we were fortunate to have Jack Hopwood available after injury to take his place in goal and he was called into early action after the visitors started like a steam train, punching out a fiercely struck free kick from Ryan Wade with Chris Webb heading the loose ball over the bar.

We were a bit slow getting going but in the 11th minute Luke Dunstan was tripped in the area after he had linked up superbly with Callum Gregory. A penalty was awarded but unfortunately Sam Joliffe placed his effort wide of the goal and an opportunity to get our noses in front was lost.

It was sods law that a dozen minutes later Bury were awarded a penalty which Ryan Wade converted. The Referee had deemed that Jack Hopwood had brought down Anthony Anstead although there was a feeling Jack had got a touch to the ball. But the visitors were rewarded for their enterprising start. Score 0-1.

The quality of the football was not much to write home about and the only significant thing that happened during the rest of the half was that both sides had to replace their centre backs. James Butler and Jon Stevenson both had to go off with hamstring problems. HT Score 0-1.

Bury started the second half with a free kick from Ryan Wade that must have been nearly 30 yards out. He struck it well and Jack Hopwood was forced to push it out with his defenders managing to scramble the ball away. We also went close with a free kick when Sam Joliffe cleverly slipped the ball to Chris Vardy, but his shot was blocked.

We started to push our opponents back as we strived to get an equaliser but we found it hard going trying to find a break through as the Bury defence were performing heroically. There were a couple of half chances, George Carbery just failed to get his head to a Jamie Warne cross and Luke Dunstan headed a Sam Joliffe free kick at the keeper.

It was like a practice game of forwards versus defence with Bury content to soak up the pressure and try and catch us on the break. Anthony Anstead did try his luck with a well struck shot that drifted wide of the post but in truth neither keeper was overly tested.

Finally the pressure bore fruit in the 75th minute when Bury were unable to clear their lines and George Carbery smashed the ball high into the net to level the scores. Score 1-1.

There still 15 minutes left but neither side looked like scoring and the game ended all square. FT Score 1-1.

A disappointing night as we didn't perform to our normal standard, but credit must go to Bury who made life difficult for us. We moved up one place to sixth and whilst London Colney seemed to be running away at the top (they lead second placed Berko by 11 points having played 2 games more) we can join the chasing pack if we win our game/s in hand.

Our next game is away to Oxhey Jets on Saturday. Jets are 4 places below us in 10th but we have only won there once in our last five visits so we can expect a tough match.
