TAFC First team 4-2 Holmer Green

TAFC goals: Christopher Stapleton (2), George Carbery, Christopher Vardy

We triumphed against local rivals Holmer Green for the second time in just thirteen days and for the 6th consecutive game.
In a game that saw our visitors have the better of the early exchanges it was us who nearly scored with our first meaningful attack after 10 minutes, however just 2 minutes later we did score following a slick move down the left, Chris Stapleton firing across the keeper into the far corner of the goal. Score 1-0.

There was little to choose between the sides but then we took full advantage of a mistake by keeper Sam Butcher who spilled a George Brinkman free kick, the ball fell to Chris Stapleton who fired into an open goal. Score 2-0.

Holmer Green came back with a terrific shot, fully 25 yards out by Eliot Derby, in the 25th minute, that surprised home keeper Jack Hopwood to reduce the arrears. Score 2-1.

Chances were being created by both sides but it was us who scored again 5 minutes before half time. A terrific run down the left by Chris Vardy saw him get to the goal line before pulling the ball back and finding George Carbery on the edge of the area, he controlled the ball then coolly shot into the corner of the goal. HT Score 3-1.

We began the second half the better of the two sides but then Holmer Green had a good spell. We were giving away too many free kicks and Holmer Green thought they had scored again in the 58th minute following another free kick, but this was ruled out for offside.

Former Athletic player Greg Deer then had a thunderous header hit the bar following a corner in the 66th minute. Just 4 minutes later we increased our lead when Chris Vardy controlled and turned in one movement before seeing his shot beat keeper Sam Butcher. Score 4-1.

Both sides introduced substitutes, neither side could dominate possession but were equally guilty of giving the ball away. With just 8 minutes left of normal time Holmer Green scored again. Greg Deer laying on the chance for Curtis Stone to finish confidently. Holmer Green sensed an opportunity to put us under pressure and actually hit the bar again in stoppage time following a corner. FT Score 4-2.

Although this was a game between two local rivals the game itself was not a spectacle, but we will be pleased to have won and now look forward to Saturdays game in the FA Vase when we visit Sporting Khalsa.
