SUNNY AFTERNOON SLOPPINESS

On a lovely warm Spring day we produced an error strewn performance (particularly in the first half) that ended our good run of 5 wins from our last 6 league games. After conceding a bizarre early goal we wasted an opportunity to level the scores by failing to convert a penalty then had Jack Seaton dismissed and had to play the whole second half with just 10 players.

The game started badly when after only 3 minutes Jack Hopwood came out to catch a long ball into the area but was caught by Jordan Watson on the leg and spilled the ball. With Jack crumpled on the floor the game seemed to go in slow motion with the players and spectators waiting for the Referee to blow for a foul, but he didn't and Kieran Asamudu-Sakyi took full advantage to chip the ball into the empty net. Score 0-1.

Jack made up for it later by making a couple of good saves but midway through the half we should have leveled the scores when we were awarded a penalty after Luke Dunstan was bundled over following a corner. But the keeper Harry Smart made a great save from Sam Joliffe's who then put the loose ball wide.

Unfortunately we seem to have a problem with spot kicks and that was at least the 5th we have missed this season (Aston Clinton x 2, Edgware Town, Berkhamsted and now Hoddesdon) and with four different takers so its not down to just one person.

In any event we were made to pay for this profligacy when Tom Cowell turned nicely in the area to score Hoddesdon's second a minute before half time. Score 0-2.

Matters turned worse two minutes later when Jack Seaton was given a straight red card after he tangled with a couple of opposition players. It seemed very harsh and the decision was greeted with surprise around the ground as the incident seemed fairly innocuous. Our chances of getting anything out of the game now appeared slim and became wafer thin six minutes into the second half when Hoddesdon's leading scorer Jordan Watson scored a third goal. Score 0-3.

Faced with the prospects of a thrashing the players did rally and we went close through Chris Vardy, Chris Stapleton and Sam Joliffe before the latter scored a late consolation goal. FT Score 1-3.

Despite this disappointed result we still remain fifth in the table but have two very tough matches coming up with a visit to second in the table Hertford Town on Tuesday then on Saturday we have a local derby when Berkhamsted are the visitors.
