Spartan South Midlands Premier Division
Colney Heath 1-2 TAFC First team TAFC goals: James Butler, Christopher Vardy
Tring travelled to Colney Heath on Saturday for the last league match of the season, knowing a win would guarantee Athletic 5th place in the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division and with it their 2nd highest league finish in the clubs history. Two 2nd half goals from James Butler and top scorer Chris Vardy did just that in a tight 2-1 win against a young and spirited Colney Heath side.
Tring started the game on the front foot with Kieran Turner, Luke Dunstan and Chris Vardy linking well down the left but it was a cross from right back Tommy Twelves that gave athletic a chance, Ollie Butler volleying over from Dunstan's knockdown.
Stuart Steadman (Minus his Zimmer frame) then crossed for Chris Vardy, his header easily saved by former Tring keeper Craig Garrett in the Colney goal. The home side started to get a foothold in the game, Geraldis shooting wide from a good through ball. Kieran Turner then hit a shot wide for Tring and just before half time Geraldis again missed for Colney, this time heading over a good chance. HT 0-0
The 2nd half started very poorly, both sides finding the windy conditions difficult, Colney creating the first chance, Hopwood in the Tring goal saving smartly with his legs. The turning point of the game arrived in the 60th minute with Chris Stapleton coming on to replace Carbery. Just two minutes later a Turner corner was met by James Butler who towered above his marker, his header perfectly nestling in the corner of the net to give Tring the lead. 7 minutes later Chris Stapleton was fouled on the edge of the area and his free kick was only parried to Chris Vardy, his header looping over Garrett to give Tring a 2 nil advantage. Colney then halved the score line 3 minutes later, Hopwood's blunder gifting Colney sub Cain Joseph a simple chance. Score 1-2.
Tring managed to see out the remainder of the game without to many problems, not the greatest performance but another win and 5th place in the league.

Athletic achieved a good win at Colney Heath with James Butler scoring the first goal with a header from a corner and leading goalscorer Chris Vardy scoring the winning goal with a rare header after keeper Craig Garrett saved a Chris Stapleton free kick. The result cements Athletic's 5th place in the Premier league just missing out on a higher place by goal difference.
A good end to the season and the Management team and players should be congratulated on an excellent season whilst we still have the St Mary's Cup semi final to look forward to when we visit Leverstock Green on Tuesday night to play the semi-final, kick off 7:30pm.
