F A Vase First Round Qualifying Replay
TAFC First team 2-0 Spelthorne Sports TAFC goals: Christopher Vardy (2)
Athletic progressed in the FA Vase thanks to two second half goals from Chris Vardy and we now face a trip to Winslow United the next round on 24th September
The match got off to a quiet start, a continuation really of Saturdays match, and first real action was a goalmouth scramble when both Chris Vardy and Chris Stapleton had efforts blocked in the penalty area and no one could hit the back of the net.
A foul just outside the penalty area on Chris Vardy saw his striking partner, Chris Stapleton, step up to take the free kick which was well saved by the visiting goalkeeper.
Little further action before half time and the scores remained level.
Half Time: Tring 0 Spelthorne Sports 0
Kicking down the slope in the second half saw Athletic starting to place pressure on the visitors defence with two attempts on goal but both saved by the Spelthorne goalie. The visitors were relying on the break and on 62 minutes such a break was quick, sharp and very nearly damaging as a side footed shot from 18 yards went narrowly wide of the Tring goal.
This sparked Tring into action again and Stapleton went close from 18 yards and then Brinkman went on a long run and his shot, from a similar distance, went just wide.
Stapleton and Vardy linked well again and Vardy volleyed over the bar, this was closely followed by a curling shot from Vardy being tipped over the bar.
Just when the spectators were beginning think that the Tring pressure wasn't going to bear fruits Chris Vardy was put through and he calmly went round the advancing goalie and slotted the ball home as defenders desperately tried to block his shot. Score 1-0.
Tring did not sit back and Stapleton shot over from 30 yards. Spelthorne were trying hard to get back into the match but Tring were resolute and gave them very few opportunities to do so.
On 84 minutes Sturges took a short corner to George Brinkham whose cross was nicely met by Chris Vardy, unmarked in the 6 yard box, and he headed home to make the victory safe. Tring introduced Paddy Downes for Ryan Sturges and a few minutes later Jack Sunderland and Adam Scotcher were introduced the excellent pairing of Vardy and Stapleton who left the pitch to a loud round of applause.
An excellent hard fought victory in a match played in a good spirit by both teams.
