The Buildbase F A Vase First Round Proper
Rothwell Corinthians 1-2 TAFC First team

TAFC goals: Christopher Stapleton, Sam Jolliffe
Tring overcome testing evening to advance in FA Vase.

Circumstances threatened to derail Tring Athletic’s bid to reach the third round of the FA Vase, but they overcame a number of obstacles to beat Rothwell Corinthians 2-1 on Wednesday night.

It looked like a case of bad things happening in three for Athletic, who had to overcome traffic jams on the MI resulting in a delayed kick off at 8:15pm and playing for 50 minutes with 10 men in the rearranged clash.

Tring got off to the ideal start as Chris Stapleton headed in from a George Brinkman cross after just four minutes.

Jack Hopwood made a good blocking save getting his angles right when a Rothwell forwarded had a chance from about 10 yards out.

George Carbery went close when his shot from the edge of the penalty area was well saved. Very shortly afterwards Chris Vardy was through on goal but his shot beat the advancing goalkeeper but alsio the far post going narrowly wide.

Tring were enjoying the better exchanges and looked very likely to add to their lead but just 2 minutes before half time George Carbery was shown a red card for a supposed elbow on a defender when holding him off. Whilst the defender appealed he was not injured in any way and those close to the action were totally surprised at the outcome which was the result of the assistant referees flag and his view on the incident.

Half time : Rothwell Corinthians 0 Tring Athletic 1

Tring didn’t make any changes in personnel for the second half and the players worked their socks off to keep their lead whilst relying more on quick breaks.

Tring's efforts were rewarded when Chris Stapleton went on such a run and was brought down in the box on the hour mark, allowing Sam Joliffe to shoot into the roof of the net and make it 0-2 from the spot.

Adam Scotcher was introduced on 73 minutes replacing Chris Vardy adding a fresh pair of legs to shut down the home sides defenders and hold the ball up to take pressure of the defence.

Tring then were on the wrong end of a penalty decision for hand ball and Lewis O’Dell scored from the penalty spot to reduce the margin and lift the home side. Score 1-2.

There were lots of tired legs and unfortunately George Brinkman pulled a hamstring and was replaced by Chris Mason.

Rothwell then came close to scoring for Tring when a back pass sailed over the goalkeeper’s head but just wide of the far post.

However, Tring dug their heels in and whilst this was a great team performance Sam Joliffe excelled at the heart of the Tring back four.

The final whistle seemed a long time coming and on 97 minutes Tring’s travelling support were very relieved and celebrating with Tring holding on for the win and have been rewarded with a third-round trip to FC Romania on Saturday, December 3.
