First team report

Tue 14th Feb 2017
Spartan South Midlands Premier Division
Sun Sports 1-0 TAFC First team
Athletic travelled to Watford on a lovely mild Tuesday evening for a first meeting of the season against Sun Sports, bouyed by a great performance against Welwyn the previous Saturday but unfortunately a very poor 2nd half performance cost Tring, going down 1-0.
Sun started the game on the front foot, forcing a couple of corners in the opening minutes. It was Tring who had the first real attack, Chris Vardy volleying wide from a tight angle, then in the 8th minute a great Jack Read header was tipped wide by former Tring keeper Matt Evans. From the resulting corner Chris Stapleton had a shot deflected with Vardy heading the rebound wide.

By now Athletic were on top, Lee Stobbs shot wide and Chris Stapleton had a 20 yard drive tipped over by Evans. On 43 minutes Sun had their first real effort on goal, a great long range shot bouncing up off Hopwood's chest and away for a corner !!

Half Time arrived with Athletic well in control. Score 0-0

The second 45 minutes wasn't quite the same, Athletic lacked any cutting edge, with Sun Sports upping their efforts. Tommy Twelves had a shot blocked and Lee Stobbs had his shot saved by Evans after good work from Ryan Sturges. This proved to be costly as Sun broke after 63 minutes, Kyle Johnson, Sun's dangerous centre forward, curling a great shot past Hopwood, score 1-0 and this turned out to be the winning goal. A class finish in what was a pretty poor 2nd half from both sides.

Tring tried to change things after this by pushing Dave O’Connor up front, which left Athletic vulnerable at the back, Hopwood being the busier of the two keepers. Tempers began to get heated with bookings for both sides. Trings best chance of a goal came in injury time with Chris Stapleton putting the ball wide of the post !!

A bad night at the office for Tring
