Reserve team report

Tue 9th May 2017
Suburban Football League Premier Division
North Greenford United 2-4 TAFC Reserve team

TAFC goals: Joe Naylor (2), Jack Sunderland (2)
Our season which started on Wednesday July 27th finally finished with a convincing win against old foes North Greenford United, who as recently as April had knocked us out of the Challenge Shield.
Ironically our opponents started quickly and had a possible call for a penalty after a clumsy challenge from central defender Dion Brown, who otherwise put in another dependable performance. For the rest of the half we looked reasonably comfortable and after 22 mins Joe Naylor, back in his striking role forced the keeper into a clearance which midfield dynamo Cameron Brooks, who having been fooled into thinking he was starting on the bench, lobbed back in from 30 yards. Score 0-1. Together with James Shaw and " old boy" Ryan McMahon, Cameron put in the sort of midfield performance that he's looked capable off with endless interceptions and passes to keep us playing.
On 30 minutes Ryan McMahon played in Jack Sunderland for his 5th goal in 3 games. Score 0-2.

We then became a little bit one dimensional and under hit a number of passes which allowed North Greenford to get to our back four. A cross from the left hand side resulted in a tidy finish in the 40th minute (score 1-1) and it seemed all the good work in the first half would be undone only for Jack Sunderland to singlehandedly not only force an error from their keeper but to have the presence of mind to play in Joe Naylor who, finished tidily, in the 44th minute. Score 1-2.

Half time: North Greenford Reserves 1 Tring Athletic Reserves 2

The second half was barely 3 mins old when we contrived to give away a second goal. Liam Irons spurned the opportunity to hook away an over hit cross and when the ball was returned back in their centre forward cuffed a shot which found the back of our net. Score 2-2. Again our response was excellent and within 2 mins an exquisite Cameron Brooks pass was coaxed into the net by Joe Naylor. Score 2-3.

The rest of the game was fairly even. We made 3 substitutions and changed to a 4-4-2 with Mesach Hendrickson probably cementing his MoM performance having worked hard and with some quality out wide in both attack and defence. Marcus Richardson made a good save in the 87th minute to quench any hopes North Greenford may have had and the final whistle of the season went with Dan Smethers still in the Refs ear over a decision 28 mins earlier!!

Another excellent performance from a squad missing a number of its regulars meant we finish a creditable 8th from 14 in a tough Division.

Final score: North Greenford Reserves 2 Tring Athletic Reserves 4

After the game Richard "Dickie" Smith unfortunately announced his resignation. Chris Juraszek said "I would like to place on record my thanks to Dickie for his invaluable help over the last 2 seasons. Not only has been able to find players as and when needed but has his advice on match days has meant we genuinely worked as a team and we would not have done anywhere near as well without his particular brand of man management and enjoyment for football and Tring Athletic in particular”

The Club is also very grateful for Dickie’s input and he would also be welcome to return should his new venture into management not work out.
