Sponsored by Richard Lovelace TAFC First team 2-1 London Colney TAFC goals: Jack Read, Elliott Goward
Results Starting To Come Good
Athletic came from behind to gain three vital points against a determined London Colney side with goals from Jack Read and Elliott Goward.
There was little to choose between the two sides for the first 20 minutes, neither side tested the keeper but as the game gained momentum it was the visitors who began to take control. Athletic were sitting deep and Colney had a number of long shots which fortunately for Athletic were off target. In the 29th minute however they did score, Athletic failed to challenge in midfield leaving Laurence Vaughan free to score from outside of the penalty area.
Athletic finally came into the game winning a corner in the 35th minute and then Elliott Goward fired a free kick just over the bar from distance. In first half stoppage time Athletic played some nice football down the right resulting in Tommy Twelves shooting just wide.
Half Time: TAFC 0 1 London Colney
Athletic began the second half the better of the two sides winning two corners with both wide men, Max Hercules and Elliott Goward, seeing a lot more of the ball. A couple of chances went begging and it seemed that it may not be Athletics day, but in the 62nd minute Athletics fortune finally changed.
The hard working Luke Dunstan put a cross in which found George Carbery at the back post who headed back across goal to leave striker Jack Read the simple task of tapping the ball into an unguarded goal.
It was all Athletic now, Colney were creating very little. Another chance fell to Jack Read in front of goal following a cross from Max Hercules, but under pressure from a defender he just failed to get a touch on the ball.
Athletic continued to work hard and create chances, with Elliott Goward firing over the bar in the 70th minute. However he wasn’t to be denied as just 3 minutes later he collected a pass from Max Hercules to shoot beyond visiting keeper Jack Metcalfe to put Athletic ahead. Although London Colney pushed forward they were unable to trouble Jack Hopwood's goal as Athletic were defending resolutely.
Athletic just failed to increase their lead with 8 minutes left when Jack Read fired agonisingly just past a post following a tenacious run by Luke Dunstan.
Full Time: TAFC 2 1 London Colney
Following a disappointing first half this was a terrific result for Athletic who dominated the second half, all the players worked very hard and never gave up, showing a true belief in their own abilities. A special mention also to referee Mr Jack Scott and his assistants who managed the game well with little fuss.
